PISA, Italy (AP) _ The leaning Tower of Pisa will reopen in June 2001 after a decade of work to stop its perilous tilt, the government announced Thursday. The Ministry of Public Works said about 200 students will be allowed to tour the tower later this month for a preview.
Tourists were last allowed into the 12th-century tower a decade ago. It was closed for work aimed to stabilize its tilt, then at 6 degrees, or 13 feet off the perpendicular.
Tons of soil have been removed from under the foundation and lead counterweights were placed at the monument's base. The work is now in its final phase.
